Rockdance, also known as Uprock, is a dance style that originated in the late ‘60s in Brooklyn, New York. It is a dance style where you dance the whole song and use hand gestures to try and “burn” your opponent. As this style was evolved and overshadowed by breaking, we’re more than proud to highlight this beautiful style and give these Rockers a platform in collaboration with Rocking NL!

At the Festival, you can also grab a copy of the book “Don’t Stop the Rock” by the pioneer Wary the Warrior about Rockdance history and culture.

On Sunday, we crown our champions! Dancers battle for their honour, the grand prize of €1500, and the title of Freedom City Champion. A mix of various street and club styles ensures a diverse array of graceful and explosive movements. In the afternoon, the preliminaries and first battles take place. In the evening, the finals alternate with live music performances and dance shows. Who will become this year’s Freedom City Champion?

Monday has been the classic Krump community day in the Netherlands for years now. We highlight different aspects of Krump Culture, come together and labb!

Behind the Decision is a year-round program that travels European Krump tournaments, gathering knowledge and insights on HOW TO JUDGE KRUMP. We watch footage together, discuss judge decisions with the respective judges, and work on building towards a fair judging system for our culture.

Chen Chieh & Camiel

A deep dive into the whirlpools of our lives, to reach the eye of the storm, only to realize after the moment of calm that the process repeats itself again.

Chen Chieh Kuan, from Taiwan, and Camiel Kok, who grew up in Utrecht, met during their dancing study in Utrecht. Together, they share an inseparable passion for breaking. Because the art form is so versatile, the two still have significant differences in their movement qualities. Chen Chieh is characterized by his sharpness and strength, while Camiel is known for his loose fluidity. Due to these differences, they complement each other perfectly, allowing them to present a surprising and varied piece.

Modus Vivendi

In the piece ‘Modus Vivendi’, what is addressed is the idea of the effort behind harmony and harmony within effort through explosive relational interactions, conversational gestures and exploration of breath and voice. What is to be conveyed is this important message: conflict is the opportunity for compassionate breakthrough.

Mark Sheats (USA), founder of Bruised & Brave in collaboration with Viki Čerček (SLO) are Netherlands-based movement artists and choreographers with over fifteen years of experience working internationally. Their work has taken us to over 30 countries where they have contributed to diverse communities, specializing in Krump, Hip-Hop, improvisational and therapeutic movement.

Wijk 1803

Solo performance by Ali Zanad

Most people associate Baghdad with the wars and Saddam Hussein. For Ali Zanad, it’s an important part of his childhood. The square where he played was a soccer field, playground, sometimes unsafe and the transit route for wondering, wandering nomads.

In “WIJK1803” (District 1803), Ali brings these memories to life with a raw, penetrating and physical dance language. Every gesture is an echo from the past. Of a child finding his happiness on the street, among the bullet casings. The square is a decor full of movement, penetrating smells and dust. A place where history and future continue to intersect.

This dance solo is an ode to the places that shape us, to the stories that take place under our feet. A performance about resilience, beauty and the longing for a home that sometimes exists only in memories.

Paradigm

What if love and hate aren’t opposites, but stem from the same force? What if one is merely the shadow of the other? That’s what Paradigm explores in a physical way. The bodies of dancers Shailesh Bahoran, Patrick Karijowidjojo, and Keshaw Manna move in a constant push and pull, breaking and healing, in a never-ending exchange. Using hiphop and breakin’ as language, raw and rhythmic. A conversation where no words are needed.

A paradigm is a framework through which we understand the world. But what happens when that begins to shake? In the glow of shifting lines and the pulsing sounds of breath, rhythm, and silence, perception begins to tilt. Hate and love stop being extremes and become shades within a single, fluid movement. Isn’t this the essence of being human? The constant tension between attraction and repulsion, fear and surrender? Where we expect contradiction, we find symbiosis. Where we search for borders, we discover space. Paradigm offers no conclusion—only an invitation: watch, recognize, and shift with us.
